Overview
Few treks in the Himalayas can match the scope of this 17-day journey through the Khumbu. Rather than following the standard Everest Base Camp route, this itinerary takes a deliberate detour through the Gokyo Valley, crossing the formidable Cho La Pass to connect Nepal's two most iconic high-altitude destinations — the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp — in a single, unforgettable circuit.
Two Valleys, One Epic Circuit
The trek begins with the classic ascent through Namche Bazaar and then branches west into the Gokyo Valley, a quieter and more remote corridor that most trekkers bypass. Here you'll spend two nights at Gokyo (4,790m), with a morning climb of Gokyo Ri offering a sunrise panorama of four 8,000m peaks — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu — reflected in the turquoise waters far below. Walking alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal's longest, and exploring the five sacred glacial lakes, you'll experience a side of the Khumbu that feels genuinely off the beaten path.
The Cho La Pass
The Cho La Pass (5,420m) is the physical and psychological heart of this route. An early alpine start takes you across moraine, boulder field, and glacier to a narrow, wind-scoured notch in the ridge between the Gokyo and Khumbu valleys. It's a demanding crossing — crampons or microspikes are strongly recommended — but the views from the top, looking back toward Cholatse and forward to the entire Khumbu Icefall, are unique on any Himalayan trek.
Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar
The final phase of the trek delivers two of the greatest experiences in Himalayan trekking. At Everest Base Camp (5,365m) you stand among a forest of expedition flags on the edge of the Khumbu Icefall, a place where the world's great mountaineering expeditions are assembled and launched. The following dawn, a pre-sunrise ascent of Kala Patthar (5,545m) rewards you with what many consider the finest close-range view of Mount Everest available to a trekker — the entire south face glowing in the early light.
Who This Trek Is For
This is a challenging route designed for trekkers with solid fitness and prior hiking experience at altitude. You'll be walking five to seven hours a day on varied terrain — including steep ascents, glacier crossings, and high passes — and spending several nights above 4,500m. No technical mountaineering skills are required for the Cho La Pass, but a confident head for heights and good physical condition are essential. The reward is a complete Khumbu experience that very few trekkers ever achieve.
Highlights
- Ascend Gokyo Ri (5,357m) for a sunrise panorama of four 8,000m peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu
- Cross the Cho La Pass (5,420m) — one of the Himalayas' most dramatic high-mountain traverses
- Stand at Everest Base Camp (5,365m) on the edge of the legendary Khumbu Icefall
- Summit Kala Patthar (5,545m) at dawn for the closest trekker view of Everest's south face
- Walk alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal
- Explore the five sacred Gokyo Lakes set in an otherworldly high-altitude landscape
- Immerse yourself in authentic Sherpa culture through remote Khumbu villages and monasteries
- Spot Himalayan wildlife — pheasants, musk deer, and langur monkeys — in mid-altitude forests
Your Journey
17 DaysYour Nepal adventure begins the moment you step off the plane at Tribhuvan International Airport. After clearing customs, a representative meets you and transfers you to your hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu's lively travellers' hub. The afternoon is unscheduled — spend it wandering the lanes lined with colourful prayer flags, browsing trekking gear shops, or sampling local momos at a nearby restaurant. In the evening, your guide will run through a detailed trip briefing covering gear, altitude awareness, and what to expect at each stage of the journey ahead. An early night is wise; mountain flights to Lukla typically depart at first light.

The day opens with an exhilarating 45-minute flight over a sea of cloud and snow-capped ridges before touching down on Lukla's famously short mountain runway. After breakfast and a gear check, you set off on your first steps of the trek, descending through pine and rhododendron forest alongside the churning Dudh Koshi River. The path is gentle and the villages en route — Cheplung and Thado Koshi Gaun — are quiet and welcoming. By early afternoon you roll into Phakding, a cosy riverside settlement where you'll overnight in a comfortable teahouse and let your legs begin their adjustment to mountain terrain.

Today is the first genuinely demanding push of the trek. From Phakding the trail threads through the villages of Bengkar, Monjo, and Jorsale, crossing several long suspension bridges strung high above the Dudh Koshi Gorge. At Jorsale you enter Sagarmatha National Park and, a little further on, begin the relentless two-hour climb to Namche Bazaar. Reward yourself at a viewpoint just before the final ascent — on a clear day the white triangle of Everest makes its first appearance above the Lhotse-Nuptse wall. Namche itself is a crescent-shaped market town carved into a steep hillside, its bakeries and trekking shops a cheerful contrast to the wilderness behind you.

A rest day in Namche is not optional — it's essential. Your body needs time to begin producing the extra red blood cells that will sustain you above 4,000m. That doesn't mean staying in bed; a morning hike up to the Everest View Hotel (3,880m) rewards your effort with a jaw-dropping sweep of Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kantega, and a distant Everest. Back in town, the National Mountain Museum offers an hour of absorbing insight into Sherpa culture and Himalayan expedition history. Stock up on chocolate, batteries, or anything you realised you forgot back in Kathmandu.

Today the route peels away from the main Everest highway and heads north-west into increasingly remote terrain. Climbing past Syangboche airstrip and the quiet settlement of Sanasa, you fork left toward the Gokyo Valley. The trail climbs steadily through dwarf rhododendron and juniper scrub, offering widening views of the Khumbu peaks. Phortse Thanga, a pretty hamlet above the Dudh Koshi confluence, makes a good lunch stop before the final push up to Dole. At this altitude the air noticeably thins, the evenings arrive cold, and the teahouses take on a cosier, more intimate character.

The morning's climb takes you through the yak-grazing settlements of Lhabarma and Luza, where the valley narrows and the surrounding peaks grow more dramatic by the hour. Cho Oyu's broad white shoulder dominates the skyline ahead while Kantega and Thamserku flank you to the east. Machhermo sits on a wide grassy shelf and, besides its panoramic position, holds a curious footnote in Himalayan folklore — a Sherpa woman reportedly encountered a Yeti here in 1974, a story your guide will likely recount over dinner. Altitude caution is important from here: keep well hydrated, eat a good meal, and resist any temptation to rush.

One of the most satisfying days of the entire trek. The trail climbs to a ridge with a stunning forward view of Cho Oyu (8,188m), then descends to the lateral moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier — Nepal's longest ribbon of ice. You pass the first two Gokyo Lakes before arriving at the third and largest, Dudh Pokhari, whose impossibly vivid turquoise waters are surrounded by a handful of teahouses that make up Gokyo village. The scale and silence up here are extraordinary; arriving in the afternoon leaves time to simply sit by the lake and absorb the remoteness of this extraordinary place.

Rise before dawn for the optional — and highly recommended — climb of Gokyo Ri (5,357m), roughly two hours above the village. Watching the sun ignite the faces of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu one by one from this summit is among the finest mountain spectacles on the planet: four 8,000m peaks in a single frame. Back at the teahouse for a late breakfast, the afternoon offers a gentler option — walk north to the fourth lake, Thonak Tsho, or continue to the fifth, Ngojumba Tsho, both wild and eerily beautiful at this altitude. Rest and eat well; the Cho La Pass demands respect.

A shorter day by distance but physically more demanding than the numbers suggest. The trail crosses the bouldery moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier — an alien landscape of ice, rock, and meltwater pools — before dropping to the compact settlement of Dragnag on the far side. The imposing rock-and-ice faces of Tawache and Cholatse accompany you throughout. Trekking poles are genuinely useful on the uneven terrain underfoot. Dragnag has limited teahouse accommodation, so arriving early to secure a bed is worth the effort, given the high-altitude crossing that lies ahead first thing tomorrow.

The crux of the entire route, and an early start is essential to reach the pass in stable conditions before afternoon cloud and potential snowfall close in. The path climbs steeply through moraine and rocky gullies to the frozen glacier below the pass, where crampons or microspikes significantly improve traction on the ice. The Cho La Pass (5,420m) is a narrow, wind-scoured notch in the ridge, with a small frozen lake tucked on its eastern flank. The reward is a panorama of Cholatse, Lobuche East, and the tumbling Khumbu Icefall that very few trekkers ever see from this angle. The descent to Dzongla demands care — loose rock and steep ground require patient footwork — but arriving at the teahouse with a hot tea in hand feels genuinely earned.

From Dzongla the route follows a broad moraine ridge above the Khumbu Glacier, offering sweeping views of Ama Dablam's distinctive profile to the south-east. A stretch of the trail passes a collection of stone memorial chortens — quiet monuments to the mountaineers, guides, and porters who have lost their lives on these peaks over the decades. It's a sobering, contemplative moment on an otherwise jubilant journey. The biggest day on the trek begins with a steady climb to Gorakshep, the last habitation before base camp. You drop your overnight bag at the lodge and continue across the vast sandy plateau and then along the undulating lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. The final approach to Base Camp itself is a maze of colourful prayer flags, expedition tents, and towering ice seracs. There is no single dramatic summit moment — the achievement is simply standing at 5,365m on the southern flank of the world's highest mountain, knowing this view is available to very few. Return to Gorakshep for dinner and an early night before tomorrow's pre-dawn climb.

A 3am start in bitter cold is part of the bargain here. The two-hour pre-dawn climb to Kala Patthar (5,545m) is steep and breathless, but the reward — watching a golden sunrise silhouette the entire south face of Everest while Nuptse, Pumori, and Lhotse glow around you — is the defining moment of this entire journey. Photographs rarely do it justice. Descend to Gorakshep for a well-earned breakfast, then continue down the valley through Lobuche and Dughla, the trail feeling noticeably easier as the oxygen thickens. Pheriche's stone-walled lodges and the presence of the Himalayan Rescue Association clinic signal a genuine return to the inhabited world.
