Overview

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra (13 Days) at a glance

This 13 days spiritual experience is best planned around April, May, August & September. It is rated challenging and reaches up to 5,600 m / 18,373 ft, with local support for route timing, logistics, and practical adjustments.

This 13-day Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is built around the devotional heart of the pilgrimage. Before a single mile of road is covered, the group performs a Rudra Abhishekam at Pashupatinath, one of the holiest Shiva temples anywhere, so the journey begins with ritual rather than logistics. From there it’s an overland route from Kathmandu into western Tibet, ending with the parikrama — the sacred circuit on foot around Mount Kailash itself.

A pilgrimage, not just a trip

Mount Kailash, rising to 6,638 metres, is revered across Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Bön traditions as the spiritual centre of the world. This itinerary leans into that: a Kailash orientation on arrival, puja and darshan in Kathmandu, a holy bath at Lake Mansarovar, Guru Pooja at the gateway of the kora, and the ancient Shodashopachara ritual along the way. Vegetarian meals, kirtan, and a healthcare professional travelling with the group reflect a yatra organised with the pilgrim in mind.

The route

From Kathmandu you drive north along the Trishuli River and cross into Tibet at Rasuwagadhi, pausing in Kyirong to acclimatise before climbing onto the plateau through Saga to Lake Mansarovar. After darshan at the lake and the first sight of Kailash, you reach Darchen, the base of the mountain, and begin the parikrama — trekking via Deruphuk and over the high pass at around 5,600 metres to Zuthulphuk before driving back toward the border.

It is a demanding, high-altitude journey through remote country, but one paced with acclimatisation days and supported throughout. For those drawn to Kailash for its meaning rather than its mileage, it’s a deeply rewarding way to make the circuit.
