Overview

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra at a glance

This 16 days spiritual experience is best planned around March to October. It is rated challenging and reaches up to 5,600 m / 18,373 ft, with local support for route timing, logistics, and practical adjustments.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is one of the most revered pilgrimages on earth, drawing Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of Bön toward a single peak in the far west of Tibet. Over sixteen days, this journey carries you overland from Kathmandu deep into the Tibetan Plateau to Mount Kailash — known also as Kang Rinpoche, the "Jewel of the Snows" — and the still, turquoise waters of Lake Mansarovar beside it.

Why the mountain matters

Rising to 6,714 metres, Kailash is considered the spiritual centre of the universe by several faiths. For Hindus it is the abode of Lord Shiva; for Buddhists it represents the cosmic mandala and the path to enlightenment. Few places carry such weight across so many traditions, and walking in its shadow tends to leave a mark on anyone who goes.

The journey itself

After easing into the trip with sightseeing around Kathmandu, you drive north over the border and across the plateau through Kyirong and Saga, gaining altitude steadily. You reach Lake Mansarovar for a holy bath and puja, then base yourself at Darchen for the heart of the pilgrimage: the Kailash Parikrama, or Kora, a three-day circuit on foot around the mountain.

The Kora’s great test is the Dolma La Pass at around 5,600 metres, strung with prayer flags and offerings, with the sacred Gauri Kund lake below. It is demanding, high, and remote — but for those drawn to it, the rewards are hard to put into words. Time your visit for May and you may also witness the Saga Dawa festival marking the life of the Buddha.
