Overview

Nepal sits at the crossroads of two of the world's great spiritual traditions — Hinduism and Buddhism — and this 10-day journey takes you deep into both. From the incense-filled alleyways of Kathmandu's ancient temples to the quiet monastery halls of Namo Buddha, from a Newari homestay kitchen in medieval Panauti to the sacred gardens of Lumbini where the Buddha was born, this trip threads together the living spiritual fabric of Nepal in a way that a standard sightseeing tour simply cannot.

Sacred Kathmandu

The journey begins in the Kathmandu Valley, where Hindu and Buddhist sacred sites sit side by side — sometimes within the same complex. You will visit Swayambhunath, the hilltop stupa that has watched over the valley for over two thousand years, where prayer flags snap in the wind and monkeys scamper across whitewashed walls. At Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world, Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims circle the dome in a steady stream, spinning prayer wheels and murmuring mantras. And at Pashupatinath, the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal, cremation ghats line the banks of the Bagmati River — a place where the boundary between life and death feels paper-thin.

Monastery Life at Namo Buddha

Leaving the bustle of Kathmandu behind, you drive into the green hills of Kavre district to Namo Buddha, one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal. Here you stay inside a working monastery, waking to the deep chanting of monks at dawn, joining meditation sessions, and sitting in on prayer ceremonies. It is a rare chance to step into monastic life rather than just observe it from the outside — meals are shared with the community, the pace slows down, and the surrounding hills offer walking trails through quiet forest.

Homestay, Heritage & Hilltop Views

The route continues to Panauti, a beautifully preserved medieval Newari town where time seems to move differently. You stay with a local family, cook traditional Nepali dishes together, and explore temple courtyards that have stood for centuries. From there, you visit Changu Narayan, a UNESCO-listed temple perched on a ridge with some of the oldest stone inscriptions in the valley, before hiking through terraced farmland to Nagarkot — a hilltop village famous for its sweeping Himalayan panoramas at sunrise.

Lumbini — Birthplace of the Buddha

The final chapter takes you south to the Terai plains and Lumbini, where Prince Siddhartha Gautama was born over 2,500 years ago. The sacred garden, the ancient Maya Devi Temple, the Ashoka Pillar, and the monasteries built by Buddhist nations from around the world make this one of the most peaceful and moving places in all of Nepal. Nearby Kapilvastu holds the ruins of the palace where the young prince grew up — an archaeological site still being excavated, where the past feels very close to the surface.

This is not a trip that rushes from one photo stop to the next. It is built around real encounters — with monks, with families, with places that have held spiritual meaning for thousands of years. Whether you are drawn to meditation, curious about Buddhism and Hinduism, or simply looking for something deeper than a standard tour, this journey offers it.

A full day exploring Kathmandu's spiritual landmarks. Morning starts at Swayambhunath — the "Monkey Temple" — perched on a hill above the valley, with a 360-degree view of the city and prayer flags stretching in every direction. From there, you head to Boudhanath Stupa, where Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims walk the kora path around the massive whitewashed dome, spinning brass prayer wheels as they go. The afternoon takes you to Pashupatinath Temple, the holiest Hindu site in Nepal, where cremation ceremonies take place on the ghats along the Bagmati River and sadhus (holy men) sit in meditation. It is a powerful, humbling place — one that stays with you.

After breakfast you leave the city behind and drive southeast through terraced hills and small farming villages. The road winds through lush countryside in the Kavre district until you reach Namo Buddha, one of the most revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal. The story here is ancient — this is where a young prince is said to have offered his body to feed a starving tigress, an act of compassion that resonates through Buddhist teachings to this day. You check into the monastery guesthouse, walk the grounds, and get your bearings before an evening prayer session with the monks.

Namo Buddha Monastery

A day lived at the pace of the monastery. You wake early to the resonant sound of chanting and join the monks for their morning meditation session. After a simple communal breakfast, there is time to walk the forested trails around the monastery, sit in the library, or simply find a quiet spot with a view. The afternoon includes a guided session on basic Buddhist meditation practices and an opportunity to ask questions of the resident teachers. Evening prayer fills the main hall with deep, rhythmic sound — candles flickering, incense curling upward. It is a day with very little on the schedule and a great deal to absorb.

Namo Buddha Monastery

You say goodbye to the monastery and drive a short distance to Panauti, a medieval Newari town that most tourists never see. The streets are narrow and cobbled, lined with intricately carved wooden window frames and small temples tucked into every corner. You check into a community homestay, where a local family welcomes you into their home. The highlight of the afternoon is a hands-on cooking class — your host teaches you to prepare dal bhat, momos, and other staples of Nepali home cooking, and you eat together as a family. It is warm, unhurried, and genuinely memorable.

The morning takes you to Changu Narayan, a 4th-century Hindu temple perched on a forested ridge — the oldest of its kind in the Kathmandu Valley and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stone carvings and sculptures here are extraordinary, some dating back over 1,500 years. From the temple, you set off on foot through a landscape of terraced rice paddies, scattered farmhouses, and small villages where daily life carries on much as it has for generations. The trail gradually gains altitude until you reach Nagarkot, a hill station at 2,175 meters with sweeping views of the Himalayan range. On a clear evening, the sunset here is unforgettable.

An early start for the sunrise over the Himalayas from Nagarkot — on a clear morning, peaks from Langtang to Everest line the horizon. After breakfast you descend to Bhaktapur, the best-preserved of the three medieval city-states in the Kathmandu Valley. Its Durbar Square is a UNESCO-listed collection of temples, palaces, and carved wooden balconies that feels like stepping into another century. Wander the pottery square, try the famous juju dhau (king curd), and soak in the atmosphere before heading to the airport for your flight to Bhairawa. A short drive from there brings you to Lumbini by evening.

A day dedicated to the place where it all began. You start at the Maya Devi Temple, the exact spot where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama over 2,500 years ago. The sacred garden surrounding it is deeply peaceful — ancient trees, a reflecting pool, and the famous Ashoka Pillar marking the site. You walk through the monastic zone where Buddhist nations from around the world have built their own monasteries, each one reflecting a different architectural tradition. In the afternoon, you drive to Kapilvastu, the archaeological ruins of the palace complex where the young prince grew up in luxury before renouncing it all. The excavations here are still revealing new layers of the story.
