Overview

Embark on an extraordinary wildlife adventure at Dhorpatan, Nepal's sole designated hunting reserve. Nestled within the majestic Dhaulagiri mountain range in western Nepal, this exclusive expedition offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pursue prized Himalayan game species in one of Asia's most pristine wilderness areas.

Spanning across three districts - Rukum, Myagdi, and Baglung - the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve encompasses approximately 1,325 square kilometers of protected terrain. The reserve ranges in elevation from 2,850 meters to 5,500 meters, creating diverse ecosystems that support remarkable biodiversity. Established in 1987, this conservation-focused reserve permits controlled hunting to maintain healthy wildlife populations while preserving the ecological balance.

Unlike commercial hunting operations elsewhere, Dhorpatan follows strict conservation principles where licensed hunters target naturally thriving wild populations. The reserve serves as the primary habitat for the magnificent Blue Sheep (bharal), along with the elusive Himalayan Tahr. Other wildlife inhabitants include leopards, Himalayan black bears, musk deer, red pandas, wolves, wild boar, and various pheasant species including the resplendent Danphe.

The hunting reserve is methodically divided into seven designated blocks - four in the southern section (Falguna, Barse, Gutsang, Surtibang) and three in the northern area (Seng, Dogadi, Sundaha). Each block offers specific game species and terrain characteristics. The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation issues limited hunting licenses annually, ensuring sustainable wildlife management.

Your expedition begins in Kathmandu with essential preparations including obtaining required permits and licenses. A scenic helicopter flight then transports you directly to the hunting grounds, maximizing your time in the field. You'll camp in the wilderness under expert guidance from professional hunting leaders, local guides, and experienced support staff who understand the terrain and animal behavior intimately.

Beyond the hunt, Dhorpatan offers spectacular mountain panoramas featuring Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Manaslu. The region preserves authentic Himalayan culture, with ethnic Magar, Thakali, and Tibetan communities maintaining traditional lifestyles. The sacred Hindu shrine of Dhorbaraha near the Uttaraganga River adds spiritual significance to this remarkable wilderness area.
