Overview
The Gosaikunda Helambu Trek offers an exceptional journey through the sacred landscapes of the Langtang region, combining natural beauty with spiritual significance. This 7-day adventure takes you through diverse terrain, from lush oak and rhododendron forests to alpine meadows and glacial landscapes, culminating at the revered Gosaikunda Lake.
Your journey traverses the protected wilderness of Langtang National Park, where you'll encounter a remarkable variety of ecosystems. The trail meanders through deep gorges carved by ancient rivers, passes charming settlements inhabited by Sherpa and Tamang communities, and climbs to elevated plateaus near Syabru and Sing Gompa that offer expansive views of the surrounding peaks.
The route follows the Trishuli River valley before ascending into the heart of the Langtang region. You'll pass through Syabrubesi, an authentic Sherpa village situated at the gateway to Langtang National Park, before heading eastward into the valley proper. The trail gradually ascends to the high plateau where Gosaikunda Lake sits at an impressive 4,361 meters above sea level.
Gosaikunda holds profound religious importance in Hindu mythology. According to legend, Lord Shiva created this sacred lake by striking the mountain with his trident to obtain water for cooling the poison that was burning his throat after drinking the venom produced during the churning of the ocean. During the full moon festival of Janai Purnima in August, thousands of Hindu pilgrims make the challenging journey to bathe in the holy waters.
The trek also takes you through Helambu, one of Nepal's most accessible trekking regions, known for its traditional culture and picturesque villages. The descent passes through Sing Gompa, home to an ancient monastery and cheese factory, before reaching Dhunche, the administrative center of Rasuwa district.
