About This Destination
Overview
Upper Mustang, the "Last Forbidden Kingdom," is one of the most remote and mystical destinations in Nepal. This former kingdom, closed to foreigners until 1992, preserves a living Tibetan Buddhist culture that has remained virtually unchanged for centuries.
The landscape is otherworldly — a high-altitude desert of eroded cliffs, deep canyons, and colorful rock formations that seem more like the surface of Mars than Earth. Red, ochre, and grey cliffs tower above whitewashed monasteries and villages clustered around ancient trade routes.
The walled capital of Lo Manthang is the jewel of Upper Mustang, a medieval city with narrow alleys, centuries-old monasteries, and the former royal palace. The King of Mustang (Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista until 2016) still lives here, though the monarchy was officially dissolved.
Upper Mustang remains a restricted area requiring special permits and guided trekking. The extra effort is rewarded with an authentic glimpse into a vanishing world — ancient Buddhist art, cave monasteries, and a culture that time forgot.
