About This Destination
Overview
Rara Lake, the largest lake in Nepal, is a pristine alpine jewel hidden in the remote northwest. Surrounded by Rara National Park at an altitude of 2,990 meters, this crystal-clear lake changes color throughout the day — from deep blue to emerald green — reflecting the surrounding snow-capped peaks and pine forests.
The journey to Rara Lake is an adventure in itself. Accessible only by a long drive or flight to Jumla followed by a multi-day trek, the remoteness ensures few visitors and pristine wilderness. The national park is home to rare wildlife including the Himalayan black bear, red panda, and musk deer.
The area is populated by the Thakuri and Chhetri communities, whose traditional villages dot the landscape. The region's isolation has preserved both its natural environment and cultural traditions. Walking around the lake (a full day) offers constantly changing perspectives of this ethereal body of water.
Best visited in autumn when the surrounding forests blaze with color and the weather is stable, Rara Lake offers a meditative escape for those willing to make the effort to reach it. Camping by the lake under star-filled skies is an unforgettable experience.
