About This Destination
Overview
Dolpo is Nepal's most remote and least-visited region, a hidden land of Tibetan culture and stunning landscapes made famous by Peter Matthiessen's book "The Snow Leopard." This vast wilderness area on the Tibetan border remains one of the last places on Earth where traditional Bon and Buddhist practices continue unchanged.
Divided into Lower and Upper Dolpo, the region offers trekking experiences ranging from challenging to extreme. The landscape varies from deep river gorges and dense forests to high alpine meadows and barren Himalayan terrain. Crystal-clear lakes, including the sacred Phoksundo Lake (Nepal's deepest), reflect the surrounding peaks.
Upper Dolpo is a restricted area requiring expensive permits, but rewards those who venture there with an authentic look at nomadic Tibetan life. The Dolpo-pa people still practice seasonal migration with their yak herds, living much as they have for thousands of years.
The region is also known for its potential snow leopard sightings, as it contains one of the healthiest populations of these elusive cats. Trekking here requires full camping and self-sufficiency, making it a true wilderness adventure.
