About This Destination
Overview
The Annapurna Region is Nepal's most popular trekking destination, offering diverse landscapes from subtropical forests to high-altitude deserts. The Annapurna massif includes Annapurna I (8,091m), the tenth highest peak in the world, along with numerous other peaks that create one of the most dramatic mountain panoramas on Earth.
The Annapurna Circuit, a classic 2-3 week trek, circles the entire massif and crosses the Thorong La Pass (5,416m). The shorter Annapurna Base Camp trek leads directly into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, a natural amphitheater surrounded by towering peaks. The Poon Hill trek, a popular 4-5 day route, rewards trekkers with one of the most famous sunrise views in the Himalayas.
The region's incredible biodiversity — from rhododendron forests to alpine meadows — is protected within the Annapurna Conservation Area, the largest protected area in Nepal. Villages along the trails showcase the diverse cultures of the Gurung, Magar, and Thakali people.
