The Babai River flows through Bardiya National Park in western Nepal and is one of the country's top destinations for fishing in Nepal. This river became open for regulated fishing only in 2011. The best time to fish is during October-November and March-May months. Permits issued by the national park are compulsory for fishing. All fishing follows mandatory catch and release rules to protect rare species.

Why Is Babai River One of Nepal's Best Fishing Destinations?

Babai River is one of Nepal's top fishing destinations for its healthy fish populations, protected environment, and remote wilderness setting inside Bardiya National Park. It is especially popular for Golden Mahseer and Goonch fishing, attracting visitors seeking for a less crowded and more authentic experience.

Bardiya National Park combines world-class Mahseer fishing with wildlife viewing, making it a standout destination even compared to other top fishing spots in Nepal.

Why visitors choose Babai River:

  • Home to Golden Mahseer, Goonch Catfish, and over 50 fish species

  • Low fishing pressure due to permit regulations

  • Mandatory catch and release conservation

  • Opportunity to see rhinos, elephants, crocodiles, and birdlife

  • Remote river camping experience

  • One of Nepal's most exclusive freshwater fishing location

What Fish Species Can You Catch in Babai River?

The Babai River targets four main species that attract visitors from around the world.

  1. Golden Mahseer (Tor putitora)

The Golden Mahseer is the primary target species which is also known as "tiger of the river". This makes Babai a premier Mahseer destination, complementing our broader fishing guide that covers Mahseer opportunities in other regions like Fewa Lake and the Karnali River.

  1. Goonch Catfish (Bagarius yarelli)

The Goonch is a large bottom dwelling catfish found in fast-moving Himalayan river systems. It holds in deep pools and behind large boulders, particularly in slower sections of the Babai.

  1. Bullseye Snakehead

The Bullseye Snakehead favours quieter, slower margins and shallow pools near overhanging vegetation.

  1. Indian Trout Barb

Indian Trout Barb are found throughout the river and provide consistent action for lighter tackle setups.

Do You Need a Permit to Fish in Babai River?

Yes, fishing in the Babai River requires a permit issued by Bardiya National Park. The river runs entirely within the national park boundary and is managed under Nepal's wildlife conservation laws.

Solo fishing without a permit inside Bardiya National Park is illegal and subject to fines under the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act, Nepal.

How permits work in practice:

  • Through a Licensed Tour Operator

Most visitors arrange permits through a licensed tour operator or guide. The operator handles all permit paperwork as part of the package.

  • Independently at the National Park Office

Independent visitors can apply directly at the Bardiya National Park office in Thakurdwara. You will need to complete the application in person and wait for approval.

Note: A national park ranger escort is required for all fishing sections of the river. This is both a safety requirement and a wildlife protection measure.

When Is the Best Time to Fish the Babai River?

The two best seasons for Babai River fishing are October to November and March to May. Each season offers different conditions.

October to November

After the monsoon, river levels drop to fishable conditions by late September. The water looks clear at this point in time. Fish are actively feeding after the monsoon and catches become consistent. Temperatures at riverside camp are comfortable, typically 15 to 25°C during the day. October is considered the single best month by most experienced Babai guides and visitors.

March to May

By March, water temperature rises and fish move into shallower parts, making them more accessible from the bank of the river. Morning fishing success rates are high throughout the months of March and April.

Avoid June (Monsoon Season)

The monsoon raises river levels significantly. Fast, murky water makes fishing difficult and river camping unsafe. Most licensed operators do not run Babai expeditions during monsoon months.

How to Get to Babai River from Kathmandu

The fastest way to reach the Babai River is to fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, drive to the Chepang put-in point, and then travel by raft into Bardiya National Park. Most fishing expeditions follow this route, as there is no direct road access to the remote fishing sections of the river.
Many visitors combine this fishing expedition with a wildlife safari in Bardiya or Chitwan, making the trip a complete wilderness experience.

The standard route is:

  1. Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (approximately 45 minutes)

  2. Drive from Nepalgunj to Chepang (approximately 2 hours)

  3. Board rafts and enter Bardiya National Park via the Babai River

There is no direct road access to the fishing sections of the Babai inside the park. Access is primarily by river, which helps preserve the area's wilderness and low fishing pressure.
