About This Destination
Overview
Ilam, in far eastern Nepal, is the country's premier tea-growing region and a destination of rolling green hills, misty valleys, and a refreshingly different Nepal experience. Often called the "Darjeeling of Nepal," Ilam produces some of the world's finest tea in a landscape of extraordinary beauty.
The journey to Ilam takes you through Nepal's diverse eastern hills, past dense forests, waterfalls, and traditional villages. The district is known for its pleasant climate, clean air, and stunning views of Kanchenjunga (8,586m) — the world's third-highest mountain — visible on clear days.
Beyond tea gardens, Ilam offers diverse attractions: the seven-tiered Mai Pokhari Lake (a Ramsar site), pristine forests rich in orchids and rhododendrons, and the unique Limbu culture with their distinct language, festivals, and traditions. The region is also a gateway to the remote Kanchenjunga Conservation Area.
Ilam represents an emerging form of Nepal tourism — sustainable, community-based, and focused on natural beauty rather than extreme adventure. Tea tourism here includes visits to processing factories, stays at tea estate bungalows, and the chance to pluck your own tea leaves.
