Overview

Nepal's eastern Himalayas are home to one of the planet's most elusive and endearing creatures — the red panda. With their striking reddish-brown coats and bushy ringed tails, these cat-sized mammals are a sight few travelers ever get to witness in the wild. Roughly 1,000 red pandas still roam across 36 mountain districts in Nepal, making every sighting a genuinely special moment.

This 10-day tour takes you deep into the lush rhododendron and oak forests of eastern Nepal, where red pandas spend their days curled up in tree canopies and become most active around dawn and dusk. The journey begins in Kathmandu with a day of cultural exploration before flying east to Bhadrapur and driving into the hills of Ilam — Nepal's tea country. From there, you'll head to the remote village of Dobate in the Taplejung District, your base camp for three full days of guided red panda tracking through pristine forest trails.

Along the way, you'll walk through some of Nepal's most beautiful and least-visited landscapes. The forests here are alive with birdsong, and if luck is on your side, a visit to Sandakphu at 3,636 meters rewards you with sunrise views over four of the world's five tallest mountains — Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu all visible from a single vantage point.

What makes this trip truly memorable isn't just the wildlife — it's the immersion in rural Nepali life. Staying in local homestays, sharing meals with families in Dobate, wandering through Ilam's sprawling tea gardens, and soaking in the unhurried rhythm of village life all combine to create something far richer than a typical wildlife safari.

The tour is well-suited for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and a love for nature. The trekking portions are moderate, the altitude stays manageable, and the pace is relaxed enough to enjoy every moment. Whether you're a dedicated wildlife enthusiast, a birdwatcher, or simply someone who wants to explore a side of Nepal most tourists never see, this red panda expedition delivers an unforgettable experience.

Rise early — red pandas are most active around dawn. Head out with your guide into the rhododendron and oak forests surrounding Dobate, following trails that wind through dense bamboo undergrowth and moss-covered canopy. Your guide, familiar with the local panda population and their habits, will look for tell-tale signs — scratch marks on bark, droppings, and the subtle rustle of movement in the branches above. Even without a sighting, the forest itself is a reward, alive with birdsong and filtered light.
