Overview
Tihar is easily one of the most magical times to be in Nepal. Often called the festival of lights, this five-day celebration fills every street, every home, and every corner of the country with candles, oil lamps, marigold garlands, and an energy that's hard to put into words. It's a festival that honors everything from animals to siblings, from the Goddess of Wealth to the bond between brothers and sisters — and experiencing it firsthand is something you won't forget.
What makes Tihar truly special is that each of the five days has its own meaning and rituals. It kicks off with Kaag Tihar, a day dedicated to crows. Normally, crows are seen as messengers of bad news, but on this day families welcome them and offer food before anyone else in the house eats. The second day, Kukur Tihar, is all about dogs — you'll see pets and even street dogs decorated with garlands and tika, treated to proper meals and all the affection in the world.
Day three is where things really come alive. In the morning, cows are worshipped and offered special dishes. But the main event is the evening — Laxmi Puja, when families clean every inch of their homes, light hundreds of oil lamps and candles, and worship the Goddess of Wealth. The houses look absolutely stunning after dark, glowing in warm light. And from this night on, groups of people roam the streets singing traditional Deusi-Bhailo songs, dancing from house to house in one of the liveliest street celebrations you'll ever see.
The fourth day brings Govardhan Puja, where people make small mounds of cow dung to symbolize Mount Govardhan and offer thanks to oxen for their role in farming. That same evening, the Newari community celebrates their New Year, called Nepal Sambat, with a special ceremony called Mha Puja — a beautiful ritual of self-worship and renewal.
The grand finale is Bhai Tika, a day that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters apply a seven-colored tika on their brothers' foreheads, place fresh garlands around their necks, and share sweets and gifts. It's emotional, it's heartfelt, and it's a tradition that runs incredibly deep in Nepali culture.
Our Tihar Festival Tour lets you experience all of this from the inside — not as a spectator, but as a participant. You'll stay with a local family in a village homestay for one night, join in the Laxmi Puja rituals, walk through neighborhoods blazing with candlelight, and get swept up in the Deusi-Bhailo festivities. It's the kind of cultural experience that guidebooks simply can't capture.
