Overview
Nestled in the remote hills of Lamjung District, Ghale Gaun has earned recognition as a model tourism village across Asia. This charming Gurung settlement sits at around 2,100 meters above sea level, tucked between two of Nepal's most celebrated routes — the Annapurna Circuit and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. What sets the Ghale Gaun Home Stay Trek apart is its focus on genuine cultural immersion rather than high-altitude adventure, making it a refreshing alternative to the busier trails in the region.
The village is home to the Gurung people, one of Nepal's most storied ethnic communities, known worldwide for their Gurkha warrior heritage and deep-rooted traditions. Unlike many popular trekking destinations that have become heavily commercialized, Ghale Gaun remains relatively untouched by mass tourism. Here, life moves at a gentler pace, and visitors are welcomed into homes where centuries-old customs around birth, marriage, and daily life are still faithfully practiced and passed down through generations.
One of the most memorable aspects of visiting Ghale Gaun is the traditional cultural entertainment. Villagers perform ancient dances such as Serka, Rodhi, Sorathi, Thode, Ghatu, and Aragua, often accompanied by handcrafted musical instruments and colorful traditional costumes. These performances are not staged tourist shows — they are living expressions of a community that takes pride in keeping its heritage alive.
The surrounding landscape adds another dimension to this trek. On clear days, the panoramic mountain views are simply breathtaking. You can see Machhapuchhre (6,693m), Annapurna II (7,939m), Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna IV (7,525m), the Lamjung Himal range, Himalchuli (6,747m), and Boudha Himal (6,974m) from various vantage points along the route. The trails wind through blooming rhododendron forests (especially beautiful in spring), past singing birds, buzzing insects, and through terraced farmland that paints the hillsides in shades of green and gold.
The hospitality here is warm and personal. Guests are greeted with garlands and red tika — a traditional Nepali mark of welcome. Meals are prepared in the traditional style, featuring local favorites like dhindo, chicken curry, vegetable dishes, fresh yogurt, and milk. Sleeping arrangements are comfortable, with cozy mattresses and clean facilities. The neighboring village of Ghanpokhara is equally worth exploring, offering its own share of traditional architecture, dense forests, and dramatic waterfalls along the trekking paths. This trek is ideal for anyone who values authentic cultural experiences alongside moderate walking through some of Nepal's most scenic countryside.

We board a local bus early in the morning for the long but scenic drive to Besisahar, the district headquarters of Lamjung. The route follows the highway alongside the Trisuli River, crossing it at Muglin before tracing the course of the Marshyangdi River upstream. Along the way, you will pass through a patchwork of Gurung, Magar, and mixed-community villages, each offering glimpses of rural Nepali life. After reaching Besisahar, you can either walk the final stretch to Khudi in about an hour or catch a local bus for the short remaining distance. We check into our lodge for the night and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this small riverside town.

Today marks the start of the actual trekking portion of the trip. After a hearty breakfast, we set off northwest from Khudi, following a trail that hugs the riverbank before climbing gently through fertile agricultural fields and small farming villages. The path passes through patches of forest where you might hear birdsong echoing through the canopy, and several small waterfalls add to the charm of the route. After a steady climb of about four to five hours, the trail opens up to reveal Ghale Gaun — a beautifully maintained Gurung settlement surrounded by terraced hillsides. Spend the late afternoon wandering through the village, meeting locals, and soaking in the mountain views before settling into your homestay for the night.

Leaving the quiet beauty of Baglungpani behind, today's route takes you through a diverse mix of villages representing different ethnic communities that call these hills home. The trail descends and rises through cultivated hillsides and forested stretches, with the occasional clearing offering views back toward the mountains you have been walking among for the past few days. After about five to six hours of walking, you arrive at Laxmi Bazaar, a small but lively market town that serves as a trading hub for the surrounding villages. It has a different energy from the remote settlements — you will find small shops, tea houses, and a sense of everyday commerce. Settle into your homestay and enjoy the evening in this welcoming community.

The final trekking day is a pleasant three-hour walk that brings you to the shores of Begnas Lake, one of Pokhara's lesser-known but equally lovely lakes. If you are in the mood, you can take a peaceful boat ride across the calm water before sitting down for a lakeside lunch. From Begnas, it is roughly an hour by local transport to reach Pokhara's Lakeside area, where you can spend a bit of time exploring the shops and cafes. Later, we board a tourist bus for the six to seven-hour drive back to Kathmandu (or you can opt for a quick 30-minute flight if preferred). Once back in the capital, we host a farewell dinner to celebrate the completion of your trek. You will check into your hotel with a head full of memories from the mountains, the villages, and the genuinely kind people you met along the way.
