Overview
The Babai River is one of Nepal's best-kept angling secrets. Flowing through the protected forests of Bardiya National Park in the mid-western Terai, it was only opened to permitted fishing in 2011 — which means its waters remain largely untouched, its fish populations healthy, and the surrounding jungle as wild as it gets. This 8-day expedition combines three days of river fishing with rafting through pristine forest, riverside camping under the stars, and the chance to share the valley with rhinos, tigers, wild elephants, and hundreds of bird species.
The River & the Fish
The Babai is home to more than 50 fish species, but the stars of the show are the ones that make anglers' hearts race: Golden Mahseer (Tor putitora), the legendary "tiger of the river" prized for its explosive strikes and powerful runs; Goonch (Bagarius yarelli), the whiskered bottom-dweller that can grow to serious size; Bullseye Snakehead; and Indian Trout Barb. Catches in the 3-4 kg range are typical, with fish up to 15 kg recorded on this stretch. All fishing follows a strict catch-and-release approach to protect these increasingly rare species.
Three Days on the Water
The fishing begins at Chepang, where you load onto rafts and start a multi-day float downriver. Each day blends angling with rafting — you cast from the raft, pull over to work promising pools from the bank, and let the current carry you deeper into the park between sessions. Mornings start early, when the forest is at its most alive and the fish are most active. Lunch is a riverside picnic, and by evening you are setting up camp on a sandy bank with nothing but jungle sounds and starlight overhead. It is the kind of fishing trip where the surroundings are every bit as memorable as the catches.
Jungle, Wildlife & Culture
The Babai Valley sits inside one of Nepal's most important wildlife corridors. Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinos, sloth bears, wild elephants, and several species of deer roam the sal forests on either side of the river. Crocodiles bask on the banks, and the birdlife is extraordinary — kingfishers, eagles, hornbills, and storks are constant companions. If time allows on the final river day, there is an opportunity to add a jeep or elephant safari through the park and catch a traditional Tharu cultural performance in a nearby village. The trip bookends with a day exploring Kathmandu's UNESCO World Heritage temples, giving you a taste of Nepal's cultural depth alongside its wild interior.

A full day exploring Kathmandu's spiritual landmarks before heading into the wilderness. You start at Swayambhunath — the hilltop stupa known as the Monkey Temple — with sweeping views across the valley and prayer flags stretching in every direction. From there you visit Boudhanath, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world, where Tibetan pilgrims walk the circular kora path spinning prayer wheels. The afternoon takes you to Pashupatinath, the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal, where cremation rituals take place on the ghats along the Bagmati River, and finally to the ancient courtyards of Kathmandu Durbar Square. It is a powerful contrast to the jungle days that follow.

An early morning flight to Nepalgunj takes about 40 minutes, with views of Annapurna and the terraced middle hills sliding past below. From Nepalgunj, a two-hour drive brings you to Chepang, the put-in point on the Babai River. You load the rafts, gear up, and push off into the current. The first section is a three-hour float through increasingly wild forest, with plenty of opportunities to cast along the way — Golden Mahseer often hold in the pools and eddies along this stretch. By late afternoon you reach Camp 1, set up on a sandy riverbank. Evening fishing is some of the best, as the light fades and the river quiets down.

The day starts before dawn — early morning is prime time on the Babai, when the forest is at its most alive and fish are feeding actively in the shallows. After breakfast at camp, you are back on the rafts for a full day of floating and fishing. The river deepens as you move further into the park, passing through stretches of dense sal forest where the canopy closes in overhead. Your guide knows the pools where Goonch tend to lie and the riffles that Mahseer favor. Lunch is a picnic spread on the riverbank — dal bhat, fresh fruit, tea brewed on a camp stove. The afternoon raft takes about three hours to reach Camp 2, with casting opportunities the entire way. Keep your eyes on the banks too — rhino tracks in the mud, deer drinking at the water's edge, and kingfishers diving from overhanging branches.

Another full day on the water. By now you have settled into the rhythm of river life — early rises, the sound of the current, the anticipation of each new pool. Today's stretch takes you through some of the most remote sections of the Babai Valley, where the chances of wildlife encounters are highest. Bengal tigers, sloth bears, and wild elephants all use the river corridor, and your park ranger keeps a watchful eye. The fishing continues to be varied — work the deeper pools for Goonch, the fast water for Mahseer, and the quieter margins for Snakehead. Camp 3 is another pristine riverside spot. After dinner, the jungle soundtrack takes over completely — no roads, no generators, just the river and the forest.

One last morning session on the river — make the most of it, because this stretch of the Babai is not a place you get to fish every day. After lunch, you raft to the take-out point at Babai Bridge, where a jeep is waiting to drive you to Nepalgunj. If time allows, there is an option to add a jeep safari or elephant-back ride through Bardiya National Park on the way, along with a traditional Tharu cultural performance in a nearby village — stick dances, songs, and stories from the indigenous community that has lived alongside this forest for centuries. You overnight in Nepalgunj.
